Updated . PostHog facts read October 20, 2026. By Ryan Doyle, founder of UserProof.

Disclosure: UserProof publishes this page and sells the alternative it recommends. Every PostHog fact below links to PostHog’s own pricing, retention or MCP page, read October 20, 2026. Dollar totals are our arithmetic from PostHog’s published tiers. We did not hands-on test PostHog for this page.

UserProof is the PostHog session replay alternative for founders who build with Claude Code and want one fix instead of a toolbox: it costs a flat $29 a month for 50,000 recorded visits, where PostHog’s published tiers come to $172.50 for 50,000 recordings. PostHog still wins on breadth, free usage and support for other coding agents.

The numbers only this page puts side by side: at 50,000 a month PostHog replay is $172.50 against UserProof Pro’s $29, and at 250,000 it is $542.50 against Scale’s $99. Below about 10,800 recordings a month PostHog costs less than Pro.

Why people look past PostHog for replay

The bill moves with traffic

A launch that triples traffic triples the replay line on a usage plan. UserProof’s price steps at 50,000 and 250,000 visits, and past a plan’s limit it keeps recording 1 visit in 4 instead of billing more.

You wanted a decision, not a query

PostHog’s MCP server lets your agent search replays and playlists. The agent then has to work out what to change. UserProof ranks changes from recorded events and hands Claude Code the top one.

Too much product to configure

A suite with analytics, flags, experiments and surveys has more to set up than a recorder. If all you want is why visitors do not sign up, a narrower tool is less to maintain.

A check that closes the loop

UserProof compares your goal before and after the fix and tells the agent whether it worked. PostHog’s pricing page describes Inbox opening PRs but not a check on whether the goal moved.

FAQ

How much does PostHog session replay cost?

The first 5,000 recordings a month are free. After that PostHog bills $0.005 per recording from 5,001 to 15,000, $0.0035 from 15,001 to 50,000, $0.002 from 50,001 to 150,000 and $0.0017 from 150,001 to 500,000 (pricing page, read October 20, 2026). By our arithmetic that is $172.50 at 50,000 recordings and $542.50 at 250,000.

Is PostHog free?

Yes, with limits. The pricing page lists a free tier on every product, no credit card, and a pay-as-you-go plan with a $0 monthly base. Replay is free up to 5,000 recordings a month, and the free plan has 1 project.

Does PostHog work with Claude Code?

PostHog documents a hosted MCP server that works with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and VS Code, and a docs page on searching replays and managing playlists over MCP. We did not test how much of a session an agent can read.

Does PostHog open pull requests for fixes?

Its pricing page describes Inbox, which watches your product context, groups signals into reports and opens pull requests for actionable issues. The first 3 PRs a month are free, then $15 each. The page does not say the PR is tied to one conversion goal or checked afterward.

When should I pick UserProof over PostHog?

When you build in Claude Code, have one goal such as signups, and want one fix with the file and line plus a check afterward at a flat price. If you want event analytics, feature flags and experiments in one tool, PostHog fits better.
